In addition to the Apple store, I visited the Titanic Exhibit & the most startling City Hall.
The Titanic Exhibit is in the docks area where the ship was built a bit outside city central and a hike from the train depot. It is mostly an interactive type exhibit and therefore not conducive to photography. One of the more interesting aspects was a gondola ride that attempts to give the feel via heat & sound of the actual building off a ship. Built for the White Star Line by Harland & Wolff.
These cranes, nicknamed Samson & Goliath are the largest in the world
When I walked to the Apple store I passed Belfast City Hall, a very dramatic one for it’s purpose.I was on the train when a gentleman informed me that it not only a place of government, but it was also a museum. And knowing how I like museums, I went in on the way back to my hotel to grab my bag
The tour started at 3PM and it was grand. Belfast was in Hitler’s sights during the war and in fact City Hall took a direct bomb hit. But having been warned, the Lord Mayor did some preemptory steps. One of which was to remove the stain glass windows. Thank goodness
The main lobby and staircase are dramatic.
And this mural was eye-catching
The rug on the platform up the staircase shows the city seal & motto
And this mural is over the top.
And the marble columns appeared to be petrified trees. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find any info on them. The statue is Frederick Chichester, first and only Earl of Belfast.
It turns out that the same carpenters who did the woodworks for the Titanic did the carving in the council chamber.
This chest was supposed to be on the Titanic but wasn’t ready when it sailed.
And Freddy it appears you have a Sinn Fein relative on the council
