I took the bus to the western part of the island to Bayhead then hopped off to take a wee walk around a circular road stating just past the local shop and then ending at the shop. When the sun shone & I got a break from the winds from the protection of some small hills, it was quite nice. In fact that 200M was the best part of a 5 mile jaunt.
When the rain inevitably arrived I found a shed to duck into to stay dry and prove a fallacy in Mike’s poem.
The shed can just be seen over the third rail post on the right
Peat is often used for heating here. There is a small £10-15 fee to whomever owns most of the land and then either one cuts, dries and cart off their peat or pays a service to due so. One woman told me her 1780 home (renovated of course) is heated for under £150/year all inclusive.
Stopped in to the shop to buy some cider (I’m developing a test for it) and beer since the only shop in Lochmaddy does not choose to sell booze, only to find that the Royal Mail bus, (the Royal Mail both delivers mail and acts as a bus service in addition to other buses) had left the shop 10 minutes prior to my arrival. Next not for 3 hours so I grabbed my bag and started hoofing. After a couple of miles I decided to see if my thumb had any luck in it and before long a nice lass gave me a ride to the turn off at Clachen. There I was picked up again and taken to my B&B!
