Berneray, N. Uist

Was today’s destination. A small island connected to the north by a causeway. The bus dropped me at their local shop & tea room and I set out to see what was to be seen.

There are not a lot of people on this set of islands and even fewer of them are children.  One bus driver told me that when he was in school there were 6 schools servicing the community.  The new one they are building will soon consolidate them all.  Besides fishing and crofting, I don’t see much work here.  I see a lot of elderly who have either been here their whole lives or have retired here.  A good place for that but not terribly sustainable.

Anyway it was the nicest day so far this week with sun, no rain (so far) and low winds.

I believe that is the Isle of Harris, know for tweeds among other things, across the water.

But one thing this area has in abundance are seals.

Very large Grey seals mostly and the less common Common seal.

And, of course, sheep.  P1030263
