If you look at a map (not the one on this website as I can’t seem to get it to work. The map in the itinerary is my last Wander) Asnelles to Calais doesn’t seem much of a hike. But the reality is I had to take another taxi back to Bayeux and then a train back to Paris then tube to another train station, Gard, to get the train to Calais. 78 Euro (£56 or $87) which I didn’t think too bad.
The day was perfect for a trip over the English Channel (not French Channel as the English not the French have always controlled that important bit of water) with bright sun, blue sky and temps low 60’s F or 18c. As that was most likely the one and only time I’ll make that trip, it could not have been better. A one way ticket causes the UK border police to take notice but once we had chatted bit the officers took my card and wished me well. I think it was James II who gave Calais back to France otherwise I’d have been in the UK sooner.
On my last trip I had planned to go from Dover to Calais so I could write that I had popped over to France for lunch, but readers know I had to cut that trip short. This was better and less pretentious.
