Churchill War Museum

At the start of WWII Prime Minister Winston Churchill had a bunker built in the basement of Whitehall that would allow the war to be managed even after severe bombings due to very thick concrete walls.

This bunker was so equipped that the PM, is wife and war staff could carry on even during the Battle of Britain. It was near 10 Downing Street, the PM’s residence which is properly guarded and so can not be seen from the street. I believe it is the grey building.

In the bunker there are rooms for senior officers, Mrs Churchill who often stayed for moral support, and a well equipped kitchen

It’s hard to take photos of objects behind glass due to reflection but I have found if the lens is resting upon the glass it often works better.

The bunker has a map room to follow operations and a communication center. This is another installation of the IWM.

There is also a Churchill museum.

The interactive ones even included excerpts of his most famous speeches.  Churchill was know to sit in bed for hours with his cigar working and even designed lounging attire for his comfort.  He must have provoked a few hidden chuckles in his “onesie”!
