Dropped my kit and headed out to see a new city. Not huge but growing. Old canal system and some old pubs.
I was staying near Nottingham Castle but it’s been closed for a couple years for a major overhaul so I’ll have to return some time.
Interesting buildings in this business park
Apparently Princess Anne and her children fled to Nottingham in 1688. Better from the outside
Backside is a garden by the canal
And next door is the Canalhouse with 2 boats inside and a bridge
One of the 2 oldest Inns in Nottingham and England, I met some nice folks here. After his shift the bartender showed me the historic basements which are now used for ghost theme parties
Gifts left to a child ghost
Since goods were stored here they had ventilation holes drilled. These had a secondary purpose as divers groups of smugglers or Luddites et al would have secrets meetings down in the caves. A child with a pocket of pebbles was positioned near the exterior of the hole and if militia were spotted approaching the pebbles, or sometimes coins were dropped as a warning. The expression “drop a dime” supposedly originated from that.
And this is supposed to be a slate from a royal castle brought for the king
And the other and better documented pub is the Olde Trip
When you carve out a cave, only the front walls are needed. Now I’ve been to the oldest pub in England in Winchester and the oldest inn!
And a covered beer garden. A seriously nice pub
