Fort George

by WBlackwell on November 12, 2022

I don’t know why I didn’t visit George previously but I’m glad I did this pootle.  The bus driver said he didn’t get closer than a mile to the fort but what’s a mile walking through Ardersier Commons, a butterfly & bird sanctuary running along the shore?

I wasn’t paying attention to where I was walking as I was distracted by what sounded like fireworks.  When I rounded the walled corner and nearly crashed into a heavily armed soldier I realized I must have been hearing live fire for Fort George is still an active barracks.

Ft G takes a star-fort up a notch

And as often happens, I only shared the place with staff.  I was the only punter!

The haar rolled in on little cats feet…

For obvious reasons this fort was never attacked by clansmen with claymores, nor anyone else.  It was built to replace a smaller fort after the ’45 to keep the highlanders controlled.
