Glasgow Second Visit 2024

by WBlackwell on August 17, 2024

I really like Glasgow.  Second best city in the world! Since I was born in Boston, MA, that’s #1.

Great architecture, lots of pubs and most importantly the People Make Glasgow. It is a very welcoming city where folks are happy to engage in good blather.

The City Council building is as nice a government office as you could find anywhere

The Corinthian Club, currently an event venue was once a bank. Nothing going on so staff let we take a few photos of the stunning interior

I’m not sure what this build was when the owners decided to add such grand bits to it

The 1st Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesly, sits on his horse, Copenhagen, outside the former Royal Exchange, now known as the Gallery of Modern Art is one of Glasgow’s most iconic landmarks.

It was sculpted by Italian artist Carlo Marochetti and erected in 1844, thanks to public subscription to mark the successful end in 1815 of the long French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Since at least the 1980s it has been traditionally capped with a traffic cone by members of the public. The council spent tens of thousands paying to have the cone removed nearly on a daily basis but when the street artist, Banksy, deemed the cone as one of the world’s best example of street art, they succumbed to local pressure and have allowed it to remain.  The statue is a Category A listed sculpture.

Knowing I would be in Glasgow soon I found one online at AliExpress.  Here’s me trying to make it a thing around the city.  You can be sure that I generated dozens of laughs, thumbs up and even happily granted many photo requests and with my friend Eduardo Ribeiro who has ordered a few for family & friends.

I did see them for sale here
