Jedburgh Abbey et al

by WBlackwell on November 29, 2019

My visit to Jedburgh checks off another “been there” spot on my list.  No rail line only bus hence the reason I stayed in Galashiels.  The windows on the bus were fogged by condensation and I had not paid attention to the towns along the way so you could imagine my surprise when I saw a road sign for Coldstream which I knew was on the border with England.  I got off in Berwick-on-Tweed to backtrack.  This time the bus’s windows were clear and so I had a nice ride seeing a bit more of the Scottish Borders. No harm, no bother.

The ruins of the Abbey are in good shape and the obvious pride of the town.

I’ve learned that rather than craning this old neck back, I put the camera in selfie mode and get my mug out of the way to see the intricate ceilings

Which do you like?  On a dreich  (Bleak, miserable, dismal, cheerless, dreary) day I often see the B&W photos, especially of old piles, more interesting.

Again I’m talking old, real old.

Unfortunately, but not surprising, the castle is closed for the season.  Too bad for me as it looked in good nick.

Queen Mary’s House. The only queen of Scotland nearly died here when she caught a bad cold after a 40 mile horse ride to see her future husband.  The place was crawling with school children learning hands on history rather than out of a book.

Elizabeth I held her cousin Mary in prison for 19 years and after her death her son James VI of Scotland/ James I of England did nothing to stop his mother’s beheading. This is the order of execution
