More Glasgow

by WBlackwell on August 20, 2024

The Glasgow People’s Palace is currently closed for the next few years as it and the magnificent glasshouse undergo some sorely need refurbishments. Still plenty of green inside

With over a dozen drums to tune, I hope the tuner doesn’t go deaf

Crowds were even bigger Saturday at the World Bagpipe Championship  but my back  was too pained to allow me to stay to the end and the light rain didn’t help so off to find the closest pub! It’s amazing how a few 1/2 pints reduce the pain enough to continue walking.  But then again I’m more in need of a standing stick than a walking stick.  Movement doesn’t hurt as badly as being stationary.

The oldest pub in Scotland is a highly contested title and this one would be a contender if not for the name. Yes it’s been serving patrons since 1679 but as the name implies, it burnt down and was rebuilt on the same location. With a very fine interior and craic.

The Barras is a market area with lots of tat, antiques and good deals

Sat for 1/2 Tennent’s outside whilst a bloke kept calling out ” Cigarettes & tobacco” Probably recently fallen of a truck so to speak

Glasgow is known for street art & murals with some good ones here

Reminds of those by Smug but I could find the name

So jammed with pipers

I couldn’t pass Winds.  It’s ok to groan

In Gaelic, Clutha means Clyde which runs a short distance away.  It was packed and the rock band of old gits was much more enjoyable in the outside garden than in the crowded room

And yes, there is a tree growing through the roof as seen from the beer garden

I’m a big fan of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s style but I’m concerned that the huge butterfly bush to his left will someday destroy that wall. The Ukrainian flag didn’t surprise me. As they did with Madiba, Glasgow is known to support the underdog fighting for what’s right.

The claim here is the oldest ‘surviving’ pub in the city.  It is a great pub

Some of the paper hanging from the ceiling might be worth more to a collector than its face value

This section caught my eye!

Also jammed.  I mean jammed once I reached the bar to order, I couldn’t find space to step away until I finished my 1/2.

Nice but no blether.

on the other hand, good banter here.

More pictures of the Other Yin taken here

Missing Scotland already
