Oban

I really like this little (8500 people) town.  Like my town of Wareham, MA it triples in size during tourist season.  The Oban distillery is conveniently right by the train station and on the way to my B&B.

A major ferry terminal with boats to all the inner Hebrides and Uist, Jura Islay and more, it is also the starting point for a trip down the Kintyre.  Which is where I’m going.

But first I want to check out McCaig’s Tower, or as some locals refer to it. McCaig’s Folly.  It was built in 1897 by John McCaig as a work project for the unemployed.  He spend £5000 ($7300) which in today’s world would be over £600,000.  He never finished it.  But it does stand as a crown over the town.  The gardens are nice and the view is worth the hike.IMG_0165

And as I said, the view.IMG_0172
