Pwllgwaelad & Cwm Eglwys

by WBlackwell on November 17, 2019

I have to hand it to my cousin, Alan knew the light would be perfect for this drive.

Pwllgwaelod is a small scattered hamlet centred on a bay on the south-western side of the Dinas Island peninsula is spotlighted. It is in the community of Dinas Cross between Fishguard and Newport, Pembrokeshire, in south-west Wales. And I can’t pronounce it.

A brief word about the hedgerows of Wales.  Not simply bushes planted to demarcate fields and hold critters in, but stone walls covered with dirt and the planted atop with witch hazel &c. Reminded me of Normandy.  With all the planning done for Operation Overlord, apparently the hedgerows were overlooked.  The defending Nazis could lie behind the dirt covered stone walls and fire in relative safety and were nearly invisible.  Tanks trying to cross had to rise up thus exposing their undercarriages to bazooka fire.  Some low level British sailor developed a fork-like device to root through them. Considering the Allies had tanks that swam and carried their own bridges, this was a big oversight.

All that of St. Brynach is left of church is this one wall.  The rest was  taken by the sea.
