Return to Inverness

by WBlackwell on November 11, 2022

The Waverley Guest House has been my spot in Inverness for a number of visits.  It has lots going for it.  Union Street is just across from the train station in the heart of the city.  It’s fairly priced with a continental breakfast, clean & comfortable.  And across the street is one of the finest pubs:

I try to remember to always look up at old buildings

A walk along the river is a fine start

The bench is best in warm, foot washing weather!

Old old are yew?

A tribute to British nurse, Edith Cavell, who for the crime of helping 200 Allied soldiers escape Belgium in the First Great War, was killed by a German firing squad. The night before her execution, she said, “Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone.” Admirable but in my opinion, wrong. Her executioners deserved no sympathy. They deserved the same punishment

Parched & peckish. Time for a pub crawl! Lots of great places in Inverness.

Across from the Cal, I saw two odd statues, Wolves at the Door.  It was the foot placed triumphantly on the skull that hooked me. They are  remembrance of the wolves that used to roam the Highlands.  Their location was originally where two dogs sat  but as dugs condition had deteriorated, they  were replaced in 2017 by the wolves.  And, after kind restoration, the hounds were mounded on the roof!

At McCallum’s that evening I got to meet Elvis! Apparently he and the guitarist have been doing this for some 15 years.  Lots of fun.
