Return to Newcastle on the Tyne

by WBlackwell on July 30, 2024

I stayed at the EasyHotel 6 years ago.  Clean, large, inexpensive room with a great pub next door, many more within walking distance and near the Quayside.  I heard them before I saw them.  Kittiwakes. Usually found on wee cliff outcroppings, the buildings in Newcastle were ideal to creaet the largest inland colony in the world.  Wear a hat! But sitting at the Redhouse outside I noticed that the type of stone the buildings were made of seemed to effect the occupancy by the kittiwakes.

The white stuff on the ground is quano.  Kittiwake poop.

Zoom in and you can see how packed they are on the ledges yet not on the adjacent building?!

The red bridge is a swing bridge

Gregg’s always has a queue.  Cheap (£1.25 ) tasty sausage roll

Saw this.  Owner & restorer said 1971 Chevy

Bridge Tavern was close to the hotel

Nice, local chocolate stout

Remember to look up as statuary on old buildings are often hidden gems

I don’t normally go to Wetherspoons but the rule isn’t hard fast. Especially when on the waterside

Nope

Close up to the RL Stevenson memorial

Some mugless guy on a building

This apparent road blocker stunned me considering its seems to be a Roman marker .

More of the castle can be found on my June 29, 2017 post

Last time I had a magnificent steak & ale pie here.  New owners don’t serve food. But the customers produced good craic
