Visiting a Pal

by WBlackwell on February 14, 2019

I met Curly French 12 years ago this month when he invited me to join him and his group/family for dinner. Curley’s getting on and lives alone and his family felt he needed closer supervision so he now lives in a home near Gairlock further north the west coast. Kenny Gollan had been on holiday (as part of the triumvirate that owns the Plockton Inn he gets time off!) and hadn’t been around when Curly moved so he asked me if I’d like to take a ride (Google Aultbea for the general area) A gorgeous day and good craic made a long ride enjoyable.

I swear seeing Curly was exactly like seeing him last autumn.  He took one look at me, a twinkle in his eye as he recognized me.  Not who I was but as someone he knew as a friend and said just like last time “Ug, you’re back?!” Nice to have mates.  That pink thing is Curley’s

The way back took us over Bealach na Ba (the Pass of the Catte) which boasts the steepest descent of any road in the UK with hairpin turns unlike any. Down through Applecross and then around Loch Carron.

An unexpected amazing day. 200 miles?

Kenny had to go to work and I had to stretch me legs so and the tide was out which meant this island, surrounded by water ….

.. was not.  The village from the middle of the harbour without a boat!  In January 2016 I found this is where the bonfires are lite.
