Walmer Castle

by WBlackwell on May 28, 2018

Chatting with the manager at Deal on my way out he asked if I had been to Walmer.  I hadn’t heard of it and he explained that it was worth the approximately 2 mile walk. The day being both delightful and early I opted to follow his advice and headed down the promenade

I think my guide could have been a little more descriptive.  “Worth the walk” was very understated.

I copped the aerial shot to show the intricacies of the complex.

The title ” Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports” is a ceremonial title dating to the 12th century given by the sovereign as a reward. By the 18th century Walmer became a residence for the current Lord Warden.  Pitt, Wellington, Granville and Churchill are among the many who have held the title.  The residence is currently set the way it was when the Duke of Wellington spent the last 23 years of his life here.

The beige armchair is where the Duke expired.

Eponymously named boots

The victor of Waterloo

And the gardens were just grand

I decided to stop at the pier on the way back to the rail station.  Forgot the CBD this AM so ouch.

A good shot of the rubble

It took awhile to get a photo without a bairn crawling all over the art.
