Wandering Glasgow

by WBlackwell on June 17, 2017

There are two major rail stations in Glasgow due to it’s central location and being the largest city in Scotland large amount of rail traffic radiates from this old and classic hub

On a  summer-like Saturday, after a quick train to Alexandria to say Hello to my friend  Iwona and getting the first hair trim since I had her give me a very short one 2 years ago, I got off the train back with the hopes of ascending the Glasgow Tower to see the city from above.

A brilliantly clear day but too windy for this venture. The highest revolving viewing tower in the world at 127m/417ft it is a real engineering marvel.  If you can envision a pencil with the base it’s point and all the support near the ground.  It rotates with very little power or effort but with high winds the sway, which would seem minor on paper can result in serious imbalance and disorientation for viewers at the top so the system automatically shuts down.  The walk down from the top is 523 steps (about 2 1/2 times the London Fire Memorial Tower) so the fact that only about 75 feet up the lift stopped and returned to ground left me mildly disappointed.  I’ll get it some other visit.

Kelvingrove Park was filled with locals fully enjoying a summer’s day.

After missing out on the Tower views I had hoped to sneak up Glasgow Uni which is prominent on a large hill but had to settle for a photo of a wedding limo and the na walk in the park.

I’m still researching this “Queen Anne’s Lace”-like but super-sized plant.   The flower head is a foot across and I have the feeling that it might be toxic and can cause excessive rashes so I’ve made point to not touch. Will have to do more research.

But this is one of the absolutely most unbelievable thing I could ever expect to see in Glasgow.  A turtle. To the best of my understanding and research this critter doesn’t exist.  I do not think that there are turtles in Britain. Well, other than the fact that I now know they do
