Monte came in with another present, this time from Jilly the barkeep at The Taxi Bar. Literally she gave me, via Mr Burns, the shirt off her back after her shift! Thanks Jilly, another example of Dundee friendliness. I stopped in the say thank you whilst wearing it on the way to BnB. It’s perfect.
Oh and there was another interesting thing Dundee pub patrons did that I’ve never seen in 9 trips to the UK. Suddenly there was a different smell coming in the door with the wind shift than the usual. Most Brits roll their own cigs complete with filter, rolling paper and tobacco and step outside the door, finish in 5 min and go back in to their tipple but Sat. evening it was obvious, even to my unaccustomed nose, that something else was added to the roll-up. When I commented about it to one of the lads (when I mention “lads” here or at www.wanderingwith.me the “lads” BTB are over 40, some over 80 excepting the occasional next generation, group accepted trainee) he said “Oh, yeah we sometimes add some hashish” and preceded to show me a chunk about an inch sq / 2.5cm x 1/4″/.63 cm thick. The last time I saw that much hash was in Edinburgh 12 years ago when I was shown a brown, sticky, smelly golf ball sized piece.
I saw no need to purchase.
Overall, very person I spoke to or asked directions from were friendly and helpful. The city is old and shows it but I would happily go back and once the new V&A is open, I probably will.
