Eilean Donan Castle

March 7, 2019

All my trips to Plockton and I never visited one of the most iconic castles in Scotland. Until today when my wee sign took all of two lifts to hitch here. Again no interior photos allowed so I stole a few. Getting back wasn’t too bad either.  Met a man who had been married in […]

Back to Plockton

March 4, 2019

As I have said you can get here from Glasgow on the bus via Fort William, or by train from Inverness or from Skye.  I’m going the latter way. This is a fisheries protection vessel in Stornoway harbour. Notice it has a Saltire on the side but no flag? Traditional fiddle music on the bus! […]

The Callanish Stones

March 3, 2019

You can’t fully see Lewis without seeing the stones which were erected between 4000 & 2500 BCE. We know no more about the why? of these stones then Stonehenge.  The bus driver enjoyed his tour guide role as did I.     When I leave Harris tomorrow I’ll have visited 19 Scottish islands.

Lews Castle Grounds

March 2, 2019

Lews Castle is a Victorian era castle located west of the town of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. It was built in the years 1844–51 as a country house for Sir James Matheson who had bought the whole island a few years previously with his fortune from the Chinese Opium trade. His nephew built Duncraig Castle […]

Stornoway

March 1, 2019

The POTUS’ mother came from the island of Lewis so, having never been, I thought it might be interesting to see orange people.  Shocker! there weren’t any orange folks but… Ooo kaaay. The first thing that caught my eye on the way to my Stornoway B&B was this lawn ornament. Not sure what to expect […]

Corrieshalloch Gorge National Nature Reserve

February 28, 2019

In 1968 I had the good fortune to arrive at Stonehill College a few miles south of Boston. In addition to making some life long friends over the next 4 years, I found myself on a campus of nearly 400 acres of woodlands and fields. Whenever I could I would go what I called “stomping” […]

Ullapool

February 26, 2019

After the bus ride through some desolate but stunning areas of the Highlands I reached Ullapool. I think the Scots decide to pronounce every town that starts with “U” with a different pronunciation Uig, (Ewig) Uist (Youst) come to mind, just to mess with tourists. Ullapool is one of those “you can’t get there from […]

Inverness & Dingwall Cathedral & Tower

February 25, 2019

Going to U.K. in January folks asked?  Loving the winter I’ve suffered through in Britain. Today was a sport jacket with no tee, hat or jumper. About 60f!! Little worried about the lack of rain. The castle perched on a hill in Inverness is currently a court and local council offices.  I’ve been up there […]

Wick-ed

February 23, 2019

Aye, a wee grin as I enjoy the cheapest bottle of Paddy’s I’ve ever purchased out side of Duty Free!  Considering the remoteness of my location in Orkney I was surprised.  I carry a metal liter bottle, lighter than glass and can’t break so I’ll transfer in the AM.  I often wonder what housekeeping thinks […]
