Having recently been to Newgrange, the ancient burial monument in Ireland, I was interested in seeing these remains on Goza a small island just a short ferry ride from mainland Malta. Rather than spending time on buses I based my first 3 days in Malta within walking distance to the ferry. Once on Goza I was able to use the Malta bus pass which allows as many rides as you want in a 7 day period. The first thing I noticed were the cacti and other tropical foliage.
Once I entered the exhibition hall that explains the history of the temples and shows some artifacts discovered when there were unearthed in the 1800’s I was lucky enough to find this guy napping in a tree right by the path.
The landscape was so very green and seemed like it was just waiting for the next crop to be planted.
Erected over 5500 years ago these temples are older than Stonehenge, the pyramids and even Newgrange.
No one is really sure what these holes were all about. Maybe they supported beams or maybe they were used to move the stones into position. This second area with it’s table-like set up are thought to be a cooling area
And the graffiti is from the 1800’s when explorers felt a need to leave notice they had been here.
