I arrived in LaRochelle a day later than planned. When I checked out of the hotel in Bordeaux and went to the rail station I was surprised to find the trains on strike. A rolling on with 2 days of strike and 3 days of working. And no inter city buses either. Had to buy a room in Bordeaux and had a paid for one unoccupied in La Rochelle. I’m still waiting on my insurance claim.
But once I got there, I was rewarded well!
Starting with the rail station, I knew it would be an interesting city.
Tour Saint-Nicolas
Tour de la Lanterne was designed as a lighthouse in the 15th century
One of the remaining gates in the walled city, the Porte de la Grosse-Horloge, has in it’s tower the largest bell in France, I believe at 2.2 tons
Tour Saint-Nicolas and Tour de la Chaîne, the guardians of the city
Hotel de Ville is rebuilding after a fire
Cannons would guard the city
I found these covered sidewalks with their overhanging upper floors interesting
The view of the Quai Duperré harbour
Jean Guiton, the Huguenot mayor of La Rochelle during the siege of the city by Louis XIII the 1620s.
The writer Eugene Fromentin earned a statue
Porte de la Grosse-Horloge from the other, interior side
