The bus ride from Lochblaisdale to Lochmaddy is about 1 1/2 hours. The ride is nearly devoid of trees due to heavily peaty soil in the low lands that does not sustain either trees or farmland and lack of fertile soil in the higher levels coupled primarily with winds that uprooted or stripped many of the few trees I saw and left a landscape that appears quite harsh.
May is supposed to be the month with the least rain but if that is so the rainiest month must be something for Noah to contend with. Kidding of course since Scotland is simply experiencing an anomaly as Eastern Massachusetts suffered last winter. The day started with high winds & heavy rain but by the time I arrived at the Redburn B&B
the sun shone brightly only to soon revert back to rain but the real weather was the wind. I don’t think I have ever been in a windier place outside of a blizzard in my life. It was too windy by everyone’s account to walk without the occasional stagger. My room was thankfully warm & very nice
and a gift in that I had inadvertently left a hole in my bookings. Since I was booked here Tuesday & Wednesday I hoped they might have an opening and they did. Could have been a real problem. I have learned to mention the final destination to bus drivers and as a result I was deposited on the B&B’s front step! And the view is from my window is awesome!
